1. Watering the lawn in summer

If we are in danger of drought and heat, the way to do it is of courseproper lawn irrigationBut you should think about securing your lawn against drought at the stage of setting it up. Then, when preparing the ground for the lawn, it is worth mixing the soil with one of the hydrogels available on the market. After watering, these substances store water and give it back to plants when the soil is dry. We will achieve even better results by adding TerraCottem to the soil. In addition to the hydrogel, it also contains a starting dose of fertilizer and material improving the structure of the soil and preventing it from clumping.
However, if we haven't done so,regular watering of the lawn in summerbecomes our duty. Remember, however, that only young lawns require daily watering (in the first year after planting), which have not yet taken root well. Olderlawns should be watered every 2-3 days in summer , i.e. 2-3 times a week.If this is not enough, it means that the lawn is watered too shortly and not too abundantly.

Exactly …watering should be abundant!Only then the water has a chance to soak into the soil to a depth of at least 15 cm, where the grass roots are most strongly rooted. If the lawn is watered with too small portions of water, most of the water will evaporate without soaking deeply enough. In this way, we do not irrigate the grass and waste water.
The lawn is best watered early in the morning , when the soil is not too warm yet and the water after watering will not evaporate quickly. We never water the lawn during the hours when the sun is operating the most, because it would expose the grass to burns.
Of course, if there is no drought and the weather is rainy, we limit watering or give it up altogether. It is generally assumed that in our climatethe lawn needs 20-30 liters of water per 1 m² of turf in summer .

2. Mowing the lawn in summer

July and August are a period of intense grass growth, thereforethe lawn requires regular mowing in summer . It is best to mow the lawn 1-2 times a week, sticking to the rule thatnever shorten the grass more than 1/3 of its height .
"In dry and hot weatherthe lawn must not be mowed shorter than 5-6 cm(approximately 3 fingers). Remember that too low a lawn is more prone to drying out. That is why we never mow the lawn in advance, even before going on holiday. Just after returning from vacation, when the grass grows too high, we mow it a little more often, gradually shortening it to the required height. "
You should also take care ofgood condition and sharpening of knives , because grass dried in hot weather is more prone to tearing, and jagged blades dry faster. So a well-sharpened lawn mower in summer is essential!

3. Fertilizing the lawn in summer

Grass that grows intensively in summer requires proper fertilization . Most of us use granulated mineral fertilizers, which are administered in 2-3 doses per season, starting in spring and ending in summer.
Fertilization is best done before rain or after fertilization water the lawn abundantly . The idea is for the fertilizer to dissolve and soak into the soil. Fertilizer granules lying on the blades of grass in combination with strong sunlight may cause grass burns.

4. Weeding the lawn in summer

In summer not only grass grows fast, but also weeds. If they are few, it is best to remove them manually. When there are more weeds or a large lawn area, we spraywith selective herbicides , ie those that destroy dicotyledonous weeds without damaging the grass itself, eg Starane 260 EW or Mniszek 540 SL. A convenient solution for weeded lawns is fertilizer with herbicide from SUBSTRAL, which allows you to combine fertilization with weeding in one treatment.

5. Fighting grubs in summer

In the summer, grubs feed on grass rootscausing the lawn to turn yellow, turn brown, dry and die over time. Grass damaged by grubs easily detaches from the ground, because its root system is significantly weakened.
We can prevent this damage by taking advantage of the fact thatgrubs feed very intensively in summer, just below the surface of the earth, from where they can be easily lured outFor this purpose, we spread black foil on the lawn overnight. This will confuse the grubs that come to the surface of the earth. In the morning, take the foil away and rake, collect and destroy the white grubs. With a bit of luck, the birds for which grubs are a delicacy will help: -)
It is also worth supporting yourself with natural and biologicalpreparations for the elimination of grubs from the lawn , such as, for example, P-Drakol. This measure reduces the number of grubs, while at the same time supporting the regeneration of damaged grass roots.
