Yellow Anemone ranuculoides and A. nemorosa with white flowers bloom in early spring in our deciduous forests. Habitats rich in calcium are inhabited by the rare and protected in Poland large-flowered anemone A. sylvestris.
Wood anemonereaches a height of 10-20 cm and has a stem ending in one white flower. There are also varieties with beautiful pink flowers such as 'Rosea' and 'Allenia', rose-lilac 'Robonsoniana' or lilac 'Royal King' and varieties with full white flowers such as 'Bracteata Pleniflora or' Vestal 'and full white and green flowers such as' Green Fingers'.Wood anemone blooms profusely in early spring, and its varieties a little later, in April / May.
Plants look best in larger groups between trees and shrubs in naturalistic gardens. They can also be planted in shaded places on rockeries and among ferns or funkia. Wood anemone likes a fairly fertile, humus-free and non-acidic soil with varying humidity: moist in spring and moderately dry in summer, when it is dormant. It is easily propagated by dividing rhizomes and seeds.
Large-flowered anemonegrows well with underground runners and likes lighter, alkaline, humus soils and sunny positions. Its snow-white fragrant flowers develop in May. Plants retain decorativeness also after flowering thanks to white-woolly infructescences. Large-flowered anemones are best planted in groups near trees and shrubs or in flower beds. Interesting company for them are blood geranium, meconium fern, almond spurge and pine.
The hybrid anemoneA. hybrida also has great decorative value. Its varieties are characterized by lush growth (height 80-120 cm) and magnificent flowers. White, pink or red flowers appear in August and last until the first strong frost. Hybrid Anemone is one of the most beautiful flowers of autumn and has many varieties: 'Albadura' with white-pink flowers, strongly growing, 'Honorine Jobert' with single, pure white flowers, 'Königin Charlotte' - a very old variety with semi-double, silky pink flowers , 'Kriemhilde' with semi-double, light purple red flowers, darker underneath, 'Luise Uhink' with large, semi-double flowers, vigorously growing, 'Rosenschale' with very large dark pink flowers.
Japanese anemone also blooms in autumnA. hupehensis, which reaches 40-80 cm in height and has pink flowers. Its flowering occurs in August and September. A less known is the spider anemone A.tomentosa 'Rubustissima', growing up to 100 cm. Its single pale pink flowers, gathered in clusters, also appear in August and September. In late autumn and winter, its woolly fruits are also decorative.
Autumn anemones are very useful for planting in garden and park groups, in flower beds between taller trees, at the walls of buildings and pergolas - on their eastern or western side. They look good in the company of the varieties of common astra gawędów, zimowitów, candlesticks, rute, meadowsweet and bristle-toothed fern. The flowers remain stable for a long time after cutting, so they are eagerly used in various bouquets.
These perennials grow best and bloom profusely in light partial shade on a fairly moist, humus-clay substrate. Young plants are sensitive to frost, so it is necessary to cover them, for example, with peat, coniferous twigs or agrotextile, especially in the first and second year after planting. These anemones are propagated by dividing plants in spring or by root cuttings in winter.
It is worth getting to know two more species of anemones , the underground part of which are tubers. The first ischarm anemoneA. blanda. It is included in the low (15 cm high) tufted perennials. In March and April, flowers appear in blue, white or pink, depending on the variety. Plants die shortly after flowering. The underground part of the anemone consists of small, lumpy bulbs, which are planted in the ground in September to a depth of 5-7 cm in warm, sunny or semi-shaded places. After the first frosts, they should be carefully covered with peat, dry leaves and twigs of coniferous plants. Charm anemones can be grown in the same place for several years. They look great in the company of crocuses, tulips and checkerboards on flowerbeds, borders and near shrubs and on rockeries. They also look nice in containers of various sizes. In Poland, they are rarely cultivated due to their relatively low frost resistance.
The second anemone, coronaryA.coronaria, formerly known as royal, is still one of the most beautiful garden plants today. It grows to a height of 25-50 cm, and its cup-shaped flowers are white, pink, red, purple and blue. The underground part of the coronary anemone is a perennial tuber, which can be stored for up to three years, but before planting it must be soaked in lukewarm water for a day. They can be planted in the ground at the beginning of October, but then they require careful covering, e.g. with a thick layer of leaves, because they often freeze. So better to plant them in April. The tubers are placed 6-8 cm deep. Until it blooms (June), the plants need to be watered, and the plants need to be watered 2-3 times with compound fertilizer and the soil carefully loosened. In August, when the leaves begin to dry out, the tubers are dug up and stored indoors, covered with sand or sawdust during the winter. The coronary anemone grows best in sunny or slightly shaded places, on light, humus soil with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. It looks beautiful on flower beds and discounts. And his flowers are also used in bouquets and bouquets.
