Establishing a lawn from self-compacting grass

The basis for setting up or thorough renovation of the lawn is cleaning and preparation of the substrate for sowing. This task consists of several steps:

  • remove weeds;
  • soil cleaning and enrichment;
  • ensure the correct pH of the substrate.

Sowing the lawn begins with cleaning the existing turf or soil from weeds, which are best treated by hand or with herbicides. By removing them by hand, we uproot the plants together with the roots.It is important that the roots left behind will develop a weed stronger than before.

Prophylactically, it is also worth taking care of collecting all parts of unwanted plants - some of them reproduce not only through the roots, but also from the stems. Remember - we do not compost the removed weeds. Parts of these plants are best burned to prevent unwanted shedding.

As a last resort, we can also use herbicides. After the grace period, approximately after 3 weeks, we dig the soil and level it.It is especially important to dig the soil, refreshing it, aerating it and enriching it with nutrients previously found at a greater depth.By leveling and smashing the soil, we will provide plants with better conditions for rooting.Before sowing, it is good to roll the soil, preferably with a spike roller, which will break up the lumps, slightly compress and level the surface.

When establishing lawns, the nutrient content of the soil is also important. It can be different, because lawns are often set up in soils that are insufficiently rich in nutrients. For such soils, it is worth adding organic fertilizers such as compost and decomposed manure, or mineral fertilizers.

The easiest way, however, will be to use ready-made soil kits for lawns.The last factor determining the later appearance of the lawn is the pH of the soil, which for grass plants should be kept within the pH range of 6.5-6.8, i.e. close to neutral.Excess acidity can be reduced by adding the right amount of lime.

We are sowing!

The next important step is seed selection.When looking for a suitable flat, let's first of all bear in mind its application.People who want to achieve permanent and decorative turf should look for a variety with the following features:

  • resistance to intensive use;
  • fast rooting;
  • resistance to low temperatures during germination;
  • decorative look.

New on the market, self-compacting grass seeds are an interesting alternative to traditional grass dwellersFirst of all, thanks to the reproduction by rhizomes, we will achieve a dense lawn using less seeds.Thanks to this, it is not necessary there will be additional seedings, and the turf will regenerate itself after damage.

This variety has also been refined in terms of resistance to changing weather conditions and resistance to intensive use.All this while maintaining an intensely green color and the thickness of the blades, creating a lawn that invites you to play and relax.

Sowing seeds should be started when the most favorable conditions for germination exist - the seeds then emerge quickly and evenly. Factors determining the sowing time are: temperature, soil and air humidity.We do not recommend sowing in windy weather.

Sowing can be done by hand, we will distribute the seeds more accurately, using a seeder. We try to spread the seeds as evenly as possible, first along and then across the lawn.

After sowing, cover the seeds, stirring the top layer of soil with a rake (to a depth of about 2-3 cm).An even better way to cover the seeds is to spread a centimeter layer of peat mixed with sand or compost soil.At the end of the sowing area, water very generously with a gentle or dispersed stream of water.

How does self-compacting grass work?

The development of turf from seeds of self-compacting grass begins as usual - one clump grows from one grain. These seeds differ from the classic varieties in what happens about a month after sowing. The aforementioned clumps are sprouting lateral rhizomes (so-called stolons), from which subsequent clumps of grass grow.

This process is repeated with each of the clumps until the turf is dense and uniform. Importantly, continuous development also takes place during drought or after mechanical damage, so there is no need for additional sowing during the season. In addition, the turf obtained in this way is inaccessible to weed seeds, saving us the trouble of arduous removal.

The emergence of self-compacting grass will appear faster than that of regular grassThe first sprouts appear just a week after sowing, they also develop at a temperature 2-4 ° C lower than traditional mixtures.As a result, they tolerate mowing well at lower temperatures and react efficiently to e.g. frequent mowing.

This unique, self-thickening feature will help us achieve a long-lasting effect - we can have gestures, uniformly green and, above all, a durable grass carpet known from stadiums in our own garden. And it is done in a short time, saving time, repetitive expenses of many treatments, weeding and additional seeding.
