Choosing a place for the vines (Tip)

Table of contents

The vast majority of grapevines grown today are derived from the wild-growing species Vitis vinifera. His homeland is a large part of Europe, Asia and Africa. The domestication of wild forms and the emergence of the first cultivated varieties took place many centuries before our era, probably in the area of today's Armenia and Georgia.

The climate of these areas is definitely warmer than that of Poland, which makes it more conducive to the cultivation of vines. We should also provide similar conditions to the varieties grown in our country. We have little influence on the temperatures prevailing during the growing season. However, by locating the vineyard in sheltered places and not exposed to winds, we can improve the conditions for the growth of shrubs.

Planting shrubs on well-lit, i.e. easily heated slopes, increases the temperature of the soil and the surrounding area by up to several degrees. Avoid planting vines in shady places, such as under tall trees. The choice of the method of shrub management is also important for the good maturation of the grapes. The recommended way to grow grapevine is to spread the shoots on the pergola. Thanks to this structure, the whole bush is evenly sunlit (especially the clusters of berries).

Shrub care is also much easier, including cutting in summer.A valuable advantage of growing on a pergola is also the quick drying of the leaves from dew and rain, which improves the he alth of the shrubs and reduces the infestation by powdery mildew and gray mold.
