Everything about the autumn planting of bulbous plants

Plant bulbs are best bought right after delivery, because dry air and frequent shifting are not good for them.Let's give up the bulbs that have already started to sprout leaves or flowers, because they have already used up some energy and will not have enough strength to root and bloom well.

After bringing home the bulbs should be planted as soon as possible or stored in a cool and airy place. The most valuable items can be put in the refrigerator in the part intended for storing vegetables. Most bulbs and tubers prefer open and sunny places. This also applies to species that naturally inhabit forests, such as anemones and squill. They begin their vegetation very early in order to complete the life cycle before the trees are covered with leaves.

It's time to choose hyacinth bulbs - we recommend these varieties:

The properties of the soil are also important, as it should be permeable and rich in nutrients. If the substrate is clayey, a 1-2 cm layer of sand at the bottom of the hole in which the bulbs are planted will prevent them from rotting.

The planting depth depends on the size of the bulbsIt should be at least twice the height of the bulb. The same principle applies to the spacing between the bulbs. Large bulbs and tubers are planted at a distance of at least 8 cm, and small ones, 2-5 cm from each other. After planting, the plants do not require much care. However, when leaves appear, you need to keep the substrate moist. Later, it is a good idea to remove the fading flowers on an ongoing basis and cut the drying leaves. This way the bulbs can accumulate a reserve of energy.

Onions in several layers

Some people call it onion lasagne, others call it layered.Regardless of the name, the idea is the same: plant several layers of bulbs in one pot, using different flowering times and different planting depths. At the beginning, it is worth reaching for a ready planting plan.

Interesting varieties of tulips that are our recommendation:

Here, the lowest layer is formed by large-flowered narcissi (planting depth: approx. 15 cm from the heel of the onion), tulips (approx. 12 cm) and onion bulbs (approx. 10 cm). The top floor is occupied by sapphires and snowdrops (approx. 8 cm deep).Bulbs should not be planted too densely and preferably alternately, so that as the shoots develop, they do not push each other out.

Did you know that …

The classic bulbous plants that grow well on the lawn include:in crocuses, daffodils, snowballs, squill hyacinth. The over-ground part of the flower can be cut out while mowing the lawn with a mower, but not earlier than 6 weeks after flowering.Otherwise, the plants will not be able to store enough nutrients in the bulbs for flowering in the next season.

Also select varieties of narcissus:

Onions in basket

Volines love succulent bulbs of ornamental plants. Tulip bulbs are a delicacy for them, especially in winter, when it is difficult to find any food.Galvanized wire mesh baskets are quite effective in protecting against rodents. You can buy them in garden stores or make them yourself.

Their additional advantage is that the bulbs of plants that are particularly sensitive to moisture, such as some tulip varieties, can be easily removed from the ground after the leaves have wilted, without fear that one of them will get lost.In a garden where voles can be too bad, it is worth planting daffodils.Rodents don't really touch their bulbs.

Planting flower onions

It is assumed that bulbs should be planted two or three times their height. Therefore, place small crocus, sapphire and squill bulbs at a depth of approx. 5 cm, just like the tubers of the ranny and anemone. Plant the bulbs of wild tulips and narcissus at a depth of 10 cm.Plant the larger bulbs of garden varieties at a depth of 15 cm.The deepest, 20-25 cm below the ground, we plant the bulbs of lilies and imperial chessboards. Only the white lily should be planted shallower - 10 cm deep.

Crocus carpet

This type of planting is done with a sharp spade, which cuts the turf in the shape of the letter H. The resulting flaps are carefully opened to the sides.Bulbs are placed in the well, several or a dozen or so pieces, after mixing sand into the substrate (it acts as a drainage). Then the flaps are folded and pressed. The cut turf heals quickly.
