In spring, conifers are especially vulnerable. Immediately after a harsh winter, they can even die because of the so-called physiological droughtj. The frozen ground prevents them from taking the water they need to live. That is why at the very beginning of spring the conifers need to be watered abundantly. Weakened plants can also turn yellow and dry out easily after a long winter.
Seeing that something is wrong, we have to look for the cause. Maybe we planted the plant in too small a pit, or - in the case of conifers standing on the balcony or on the terrace - in too small a pot? Or maybe the substrate is wrong? It is not true that conifers can grow in any soil!
If its permeability is insufficient, the roots still standing in the water may rot and the inner part of the plant turn brown due to the attack of fungi. It protects against infection for 30 days and additionally increases immunity.
It is clearly visible how the plant regains its he althy, "alive" appearance after such therapy. Mushrooms also cause another problem: shoot tip dieback. It can be de alt with relatively easily by applying 2-3 sprays with an interval of 14 days.It should be done in the period from the end of March to May.For this purpose, it is best to use a long-acting general-use fungicide, which penetrates deep inside the shoots and protects young growths against infection.
Many insects like to feed on conifers. They can be seen on the underside of the needles when the shoots die and turn brown. You will probably meet the spruce aphid there. You can get rid of this pest by using an insecticide, because it penetrates deep into the plant and fights even those aphids that are not sprayed directly. The reason for the browning of the needles may also be tiny spider veins, which can be fought with a special preparation against spider mites.
One of the most common pests that attack conifers is the gorse, a close relative of the aphid. The end of March and the beginning of April are the best times to combat them.Spraying with a suitable agent should be done early, before the shelters wake up and start feeding after the winter hibernation; and this most often happens in April.
If we don't have time with this spraying, the so-called galls, looking like cones, in which the gorge larvae develop. In such a situation, the effective preparation will be a long-acting (4 weeks) insecticide for the corners.
The resistance of conifers to a large extent depends on proper fertilization. What matters is not only the composition of the fertilizer, ensuring the right amount of nutrients, but also delivering them at the right time, in small portions.Any, even temporary disturbances, can quickly affect the deterioration of the plant's condition and lead to a decrease in their immunity.
The safest thing is to buy a long-acting fertilizer for conifers or a conifers. Thanks to them, the plants will enjoy our eyes throughout the spring and summer and will survive in good condition until the next season. We do not risk a dangerous over-fertilization, or that the plants will be left without support during the period of intensive growth, e.g. when we go on vacation.
