Among the many sweet cherries grown in our gardens, the most valuable are varieties with an early fruit ripening period, incl. 'Summit'.In most years, we start harvesting its fruits at the end of June. The advantage of this variety is that the fruits can be harvested as soon as they turn pink.
Even if they are not fully ripe yet, they can be picked, because they are still exceptionally sweet and aromatic. The full maturity of the fruit can be recognized by the red color of the peel, which, unlike other varieties never becomes maroon. The fruit belongs to the group of cartilages, which means that the flesh is quite firm and juicy. Thanks to this, they are resistant to bruises and can be kept for quite a long time.
While most early varieties have little fruit, 'Summit' belongs to large-fruited varieties. A single fruit can weigh up to 10-15 g. Fruit of an impressive size is difficult to confuse with another variety, because they are distinguished by a heart-shaped shape and a bright red skin with fine stripes.
The trees of the 'Summit' variety are distinguished by frost resistance
and good he alth, which is why they are rarely affected by diseases.Sometimes moniliosis may appear during flowering.Symptoms are the dying and drying out of the youngest growths and flowers.
The tree forms regular inverted cone-shaped crowns. Forming 'Summit' is easy, although most of the branches departing from the conductor grow more or less vertically.
Perfect cherries!
It is not beneficial, therefore the twigs should be bent to a more horizontal position and cut to a lesser extent. The advantage of 'Summit' is also the early beginning of the fruiting period. When planting a young tree, we will often harvest the first cherries in the second year after planting. If the weather is good in spring and there are no late frosts, we can expect abundant and early crops.
