Growing potatoes - when to plant potatoes?

"I have a proven method of success in growing potatoes and I will be happy to share it" - Halina Kołocka, Wyszków

I would like to share my secret of growing potatoes. It is thanks to him that my potatoes yield excellent.

Potato planting date

Potatoes are usually planted at the end of April or the beginning of May, and I do it in the first days of April.Years ago I planted them on April 2 and the harvest was abundant, so since then I only stick to this term.If there are frosts and the shoots freeze - nothing terrible.Vegetables very quickly sprout new, he althy shoots, which quickly climb towards the sun.

For wintering, I always try to choose medium-sized specimens with clear, he althy eyes. A week before the planned planting, I take the potatoes from the winter cellar covered with sand and put them in a dark, dry place, e.g. under the table or under the bed. When 1.5-2 cm sprouts appear, I start planting.

Eyes in potatoes

The meshes on potatoes are usually scattered unevenly: on the one hand there are more of them, on the other hand less. As a rule, I cut off the "bald" part of the tuber with a knife - you can easily use it in the kitchen, and I use the strewn with eyes on the field.

Planting potatoes

In each well I pour approx.150-200 g of ash - this is the best conditioner and at the same time protects potatoes from diseases. And additionally - in order for the potato to grow large, I pick 3-5 buds from each bush during flowering. Then the entire growth force will be directed not to the flowers, but to the tuber. If all these rules are followed, potatoes can be dug up as early as mid-June.

Recipe for the Garden - When is it best to plant potatoes?

The advice contained in some of the lists is controversial. Potatoes can only be planted early in warmer climates. The most important thing is the soil temperature, which cannot drop below 7 ° C at a depth of 10 cm.We also disagree with the author on the issue of tubers. Surely sprouts will not grow in the dark!

The sprouts that appear are white, long and brittle. Such breaks off. Proper germination can only take place in the light (but not in direct sunlight) at 18-20 ° C during the first 2 weeks and 10-12 ° C on the following days.
