A lawn in symbiosis with a mowing robot

From every garden and lawn, both the ones that are just under construction and the ones that already exist, you can create an intelligent garden in which mowing the lawn will be entrusted to a robotic lawnmower. This is the most modern way of lawn care and offers the garden owner freedom - free time for family and friends, freedom to come in the garden, relaxed vacation,
and it provides safe conditions for children to play.

The robot needs conditions to move freely around the designated area, which is ensured by the correct installation of the boundary wire and the docking station, as well as the use of several elements of space planning. The installation can be modified and adapted to the existing conditions, but it is worth getting to know the robot's mowing philosophy and immediately implement the basic rules of laying the boundary wire.

Understand the robotic lawnmower's philosophy

The intelligent lawn mower works independently thanks to a technologically advanced system of signal transmission between the minicomputer
and sensors on the robot and the boundary wire installed in the garden. The boundary wire should define the area to be mowed, that is, the area within which the lawnmower can move freely - the robot stops when it crosses this limit.“The boundary wire should be optimally stretched along its entire length and should surround not only the mowing area, but also every element of the garden arrangement, such as a tree and flower bed, elements of small architecture such as arbor, etc. located in the lawn area.

The cable and the docking station can of course be moved if you want to change the shape of the lawn or modify the zoning, but this requires time and a bit of work. Therefore, it is easier to implement certain rules of preparing the lawn and the entire area for the lawnmower right away, to give it freedom of action, and for yourself - peace of mind
and the pleasure of relaxing on the beautiful grass. " - explains Robert Drzewek, Honda Miimo Product Manager from Aries Power Equipment - General Machine Distributor
and Honda devices in Poland.

Substrate preparation

The lawn, and therefore the ground above all, should be well leveled and stabilized. This effect is achieved by rolling - one of the steps in the process of setting up a lawn. The idea is that the grass grows on a stable surface, which will consequently ensure a perfectly even cut.An additional practical advantage of the Honda Miimo is also deterring voles that feed in the soil, and whose underground passages create a convex map of patterns on the lawn.

Arrangement of the garden and lawn

  • All grass areas must be connected to each other so that the Honda Miimo can freely change the mowing zones and reach the corners that require mowing.
  • All elements decorating the garden, such as walls, ponds, steps should be planned in such places as not to block the robot moving on the grass. "In the case of the Honda Miimo, the three models of which are very similar in size, the narrowest passages connecting the lawn zones must be at least 1 m wide so as not to obstruct the robot's passage." - adds Robert Drzewek.
  • Lawn planted areas should be at least 3 m wide and surrounded by a boundary wire.
  • For gardens and lawns with slopes, check the slope of the area on which the lawnmower is to move, as robotic lawnmowers, depending on the model, tend to slope up to a certain degree. “One of the unique advantages of the Honda Miimo is that it can climb across the slope, but also within certain limits. Slopes in the area to be mown must have a maximum slope of 250-46%. On the other hand, the slopes on the edge of the lawn on which the boundary wire is laid, delimiting the mowing area, should not exceed 150-26% of the slope. " - says Robert Drzewek
  • Automatic irrigation lines underground should not be placed directly below the turf. It is best to place them at a depth of about 25 cm.
  • It is also worth remembering to remove cones, small branches, stones and small toys, especially rubber ones, from the lawn.

Rules for installing the boundary wire

  • The boundary wire must be optimally tensioned along its entire length, it should define the mowing zones and separate from other architectural elements of the space, such as a driveway, building, terrace, gazebo, decorative walls, stairs, flower beds, topiary, etc.
  • The wire can be installed on the grass and secured with special stakes.Installation can be done safely on an existing lawn as the cable does not damage the turf. A more practical solution is to lay it under the layer of turf and soil at a depth of 5 - 10 cm, and up to a maximum of 20 cm, because then it will not interfere with other gardening works, such as aeration or scarification of the lawn.
  • Building facades, fences, decorative walls, etc. should be separated from the lawn with a narrow zone, approx. 25 cm wide, covered with tiles or cubes. “This solution facilitates accurate mowing. It is related to the design of mowing robots, in which the cutting blades are always located on the underside of the housing and, for safety reasons, away from the edge of the housing. This zone, tangent to the obstacle, is inaccessible to the knives and would have to be mowed with a scythe, and thanks to the cobblestone band, the mower reaches the very edges of the lawn. " - explains Robert Drzewek.
  • In the case of lawns adjacent to underground garage entrances, slopes, pools, the boundary wire should be laid approx. 1 m from the obstacle or the obstacle should be fenced off with a fence approx. 15 cm high.
  • The wells in the lawn area should be surrounded with a boundary wire so that the lawn mower does not run over the cover. On larger septic tanks, the robot may become disoriented and find it difficult to return to the mowing area.
  • Trampolines for children, popular in gardens, should be secured from the bottom with a net. Practical experience shows that the metal legs of the trampoline can confuse the lawnmower.
  • The Honda Miimo robotic lawnmower is safe for children and pets, and you can play with children on the lawn at the same time as the robot mows the grass. On the other hand, play corners equipped with many elements, such as a slide, sandbox, swing, where the robot would have difficulty maneuvering between obstacles, should be surrounded with a boundary wire and separated from the mowing zone.

Docking Station Setting

The docking station is a critical part of your installation, the place where the lawnmower recharges the battery. Therefore, the device must have an easy access and exit path to it. “Usually, the docking base should be at the boundary wire line or in a corner, and the front side must provide the robot with an open space. The latest model Honda Miimo 3000 uses an innovative solution that allows complete flexibility in the setting of stations.

In this case, the base can be placed anywhere in the garden
and anywhere in relation to the boundary wire. It is seemingly a trifle, but it really makes it easier to arrange the installation in harmony with the arrangement of the garden. I only suggest that the return path to the base should be practically always programmed so that it is as short as possible for the robot. " - advised Robert Drzewek.

Honda Miimo - intelligent, practically noiseless (the level of 46-47 dB is comparable to the noise level of a refrigerator and quieter than the sound of rain), the mower systematically cuts the grass on its own in the designated area and within a specified time, ensuring its perfect condition and appearanceThis is the most modern method of lawn care, offering the garden owner freedom - more time for family and friends, freedom to come in the garden, a quiet vacation, and a safe environment for children to play.

New Honda Miimo models with improved software in Polish, innovative digital signal, navigation sensor system and new cutting disc significantly improve the work of the robot. The PIN code protects against unauthorized use of the robot.

The robotic lawnmower is available in the following versions: Honda Miimo 310 (mowing area 400 - 1,500 m2), Honda Miimo 520 (800 - 3,000 m2) and Honda Miimo 3000 (1,000 - 4,000 m2) managed by free smartphone application and Bluetooth technology.
