Thuja is a coniferous plant from the cypress family, also known as thuja. In Poland, these plants are bred primarily because of their decorative appearance and pleasant, resinous smell. Thuja brabant is one of the popular varieties of the Thuja occidentalis. What is worth knowing about this plant? What does it look like and how should it be looked after to make it beautiful?
Thuja brabant - description.Thuja brabant is a branchy conifer that grows very quickly and does not have great care requirements. These two features determine the popularity of this plant.Thuja occidentalis brabant has a columnar habit. Its twigs are strongly flattened, and thanks to appropriate pruning, they thicken perfectly. The light green needles darken slightly during the winter - but this is not a significant difference. Thuja brabant has a particular tendency to create numerous cones. This reduces the decorativeness of the tree, but can be easily removed by hand.
Thuja brabant - growth, height.Thuja brabant is also known as a hedge thuja, due to the fact that this plant is often used as a hedge. It grows very fast, although the older it is, the smaller the increase is. During the year, the plant is able to increase its height by up to 40 centimeters. In 10 years it reaches a height of about 3 meters and grows further, reaching even 5 meters. It is also easy to trim and therefore easy to handle. It creates a natural shield against the eyes of neighbors or uninvited guests. However, the question is how to plant thuja brabant densely so that it forms a coherent hedge over time? It is recommended to put plants every 50-70 centimeters.
Care for thuja brabant.Thuja brabant also owes its popularity to low maintenance requirements. Caring for it does not take much time, and it grows very quickly. If it is trimmed regularly, it also compacts nicely. Its formation is not at all problematic - everyone can handle trimming. As for seedlings, a sunny area with fertile, slightly acidic soils should be chosen for them. However, it is a plant that can withstand other conditions - as long as it has access to water and is not in a large shade. Planting plants sold in containers can be done all year round, although it is best done in fall or early spring. However, the requirements of this plant include regular fertilization. This does not need to be done in the first year after planting, as long as the soil has been well fertilized. Later, however, you need to fertilize the soil - from spring until July. Thuja requires irrigation, as it is sensitive to a lack of water.
When to prune thuja brabant ?.Growing thuja brabant is not particularly problematic, but if you want your plant to look beautiful, you should trim it regularly. This will allow it to thicken, making it look even more decorative. When should the thujas be trimmed? Preferably in spring - the end of March or April. About 1/3 the part that grew in the previous year is cut off. It is also worth removing damaged (i.e. frozen or dead) shoots. The price of this plant depends on the place where we buy the seedling, as well as its size. Small specimens can be purchased for just a few zlotys. Thuja brabant, about 150 centimeters high, so much grown, costs about 30 zlotys.
