August in the vegetable garden

We collect garlic

In the first half of August, we dig out garlic from spring planting. Yellowing and drying leaves are a signal for harvesting.Later the garlic bulbs may crumble or root again.

Pumpkin cuts

In the cultivation of the gourd, you need to prune, leaving 3-4 fruits on the plant. We break the unnecessary buds when the fruit reaches the size of a tennis ball.At the same time, shorten all the shoots, leaving 3-4 leaves behind the last fruit. This treatment will accelerate the ripening of the fruit.Remove all fruitless shoots.

We sow spinach

In mid-August, we can sow spinach for the autumn harvest in the amount of 30 g seeds / 10 m2.It is planted in rows spaced 20 cm apart.Autumn spinach is the tastiest and contains less oxalate.

We care for tomatoes

We are still systematically tying the main shoots of tomatoes. The remaining treatments also include picking small side shoots growing from the leaf axils.August is the month of intensive tomato harvest. We collect them systematically, because if left on the plant for too long, they inhibit the maturation of the remaining fruits.

We break Chinese cabbage

In August, we break Chinese cabbage from July sowing. This treatment should be performed when, apart from the cotyledons, also one true leaf has developed.During the break, leave the plants in a row every 25-30 cm.
