I have a lot of 'Holmstrup' tui in my garden. I bought seedlings of the first bushes. They grew very fast. One spring, I noticed that unknown plants appeared on the litter beneath them. Their appearance meant nothing to me, but when I ripped one off and rubbed it in my hand, it smelled like thuja.
Thuja reproduction
I quilted young plants into the garden to see what would grow out of them. Already in the fall I found out that these are indeed thuja. It was a few years ago. Since then, I have been actively breeding these shrubs.
Care and supply
From my 12-year observation of the garden, I know that you should not fertilize and water often thuja or other conifers. Plants get used to the fact that we feed them and then do not try to survive on their own. For example, if one year we do not provide the plant with fertilizer, it will become weaker and less resistant to disease. On the other hand, when we over-water, fungal infections, mold or root rot may appear.
I supply my plantation only once a year - in spring - with granulated multi-component fertilizer, intended for conifers. I don't really water the bushes, because my husband and I have arranged a bark substrate around them, which keeps them moist.I also try not to use any chemicals. While they fight disease and destroy pests, they also weaken plants.
I use thuja seedlings for a hedge and I am happy to distribute it to my family and friends.
