The Practical Gardener: The basics of cutting fruit trees

Table of contents

Pruning fruit trees is not at all difficult. We will try to prove it with the example of several popular fruit plants.First, however, as an introduction, we will present the general principles of pruning trees and shrubs, taking into account various techniques and terms.

We distinguish between winter and summer cuts. We do the first between February and April.Treatments taken during the dormancy period accelerate the development of shoots in the coming season, primarily affecting stronger vegetative growth. the generative parts of the tree, that is, the fruit.

You need to know that only then will we be able to fully control the development of plants. It is important especially in the initial stage of development of young trees (then we make the so-called forming cutting), when we give the crown the desired shape.

Cutting after planting is always done in spring, even when the tree has already been planted in autumn. Then trim the side shoots above the bud facing outwards.Useless and too densely growing shoots are cut at the base.In the case of shaping pruning, made 2 to 6 years after planting, shortening of too long side shoots is repeated, removing all vertically growing wolves, and also shoots that can compete with the guide.

In the following years, a restoring (conservative) cut is made. Thanks to him, the systematic replacement of shoots takes place, so we also remove the oldest fruit-bearing branches. When the tree is older, we do not shorten the side shoots anymore.

ABC of cutting ornamental shrubs

In old, irregularly tended trees, fruit-bearing shoots age quickly, therefore it is necessary to perform a rejuvenating cut. Then we X-ray the crown strongly, removing all the old parts of the shoots. In the following year, we return to the renewing cut, and we also repeat it in the following years.
