Practical Gardener: last chores before winter

Decorative garden: perennials repeating flowering in autumn

Some spring or summer flowering perennials may bloom again in the fall. It can happen spontaneously or with our help.Just trim the shoots after the first main flowering is completed.

Many well-known and popular perennials have such a property: garden delphinium, garden adjective, sunflower, perennial lupine, hearts magnificent, great pyrethrum, pink pyrethrum, gypsophila panicula, chalcedonian flint, yarrow snot. The second, fall bloom will be more modest than the first.

Balconies and terraces: cutting plants

Before balcony plants that do not winter in the ground, such as fuchsia, lantana, rosemary, citrus and others, reach our basements, garages or porches, it is good to cut their shoots. If we have not done it before bringing it into the room, it is worth carrying out this procedure at the beginning of the resting period.Remove sick, damaged or weak shoots, leaving the strongest ones. If the crown is still too dense shoots can be shortened a bit.

With a strong pruning to form and stimulate flowering, let's hold off until late winter. After autumn cutting, it will be easier to keep the shoots he althy (strongly thickened shoots are more often attacked by pests and fungal diseases), and by limiting their growth, it will be easier for us to place them even in a small room.

Trees and shrubs: colorful pods on the tree

In November, large, flat pods of the Gleditsia triacanthos L start to mature. They are spirally twisted and have a dark brown color. Their length can be up to 40 cm and they remain on trees until late winter or even spring. The pods are very decorative and are often used in a variety of compositions, e.g. in live and dry bouquets. The needle forms long thorns that are often found on the trunks of young trees.

In Poland it grows up to 15-20 m, has seasonal, double-pinnate leaves. It creates an irregular, flat and open crown with branches arranged in tiers. In youth, it is characterized by very rapid growth. The three-thorny needle should be planted in a large garden in a sunny position and free from strong winds, as it has quite brittle wood.

Prefers moderately fertile soils.Adapts perfectly to harsh urban conditions. This plant goes well with shrubs and tall perennials such as echinacea and asters, and tall grasses such as miscanthus.

We clean tunnels and greenhouses

In order to reduce the incidence of diseases on plants grown in greenhouses or tunnels next year, they should be cleaned of all plant residues, which are a great breeding ground for pathogens. If necessary, we should also chemically disinfect the tunnels.Clean and well-protected covers will last much longer.

He althy watercress

Cress is a perfect supplement to the diet, it is suitable for salads and salads with eggs, so it is worth growing it not only for Christmas. Its requirements are small - a bit of water and light.

Decorative pepper

If you want to cheer up the autumn gray outside the window a little, it is worth placing pots with decorative peppers on the windowsill or decorating the kitchen with dried peppers.

Autumn cleaning: prepare the lawn for winter rest

You have to take care of the lawn practically all year round. Now it needs to be prepared for winter rest. If we do everything right, the lawn will repay us with an impeccable appearance in the spring. The last mowing is carried out at the end of October or even at the beginning of November, set the mower blade to a height of 2 to 4 cm.Grass too high it will lie down, while too low it may freeze. From October, we do not use nitrogen fertilizers (which stimulate the grass to grow), and only autumn potassium fertilizers (which strengthen the stalks and improve their resistance to fungal infections).

For as long as possible, rake the leaves off the lawn and spread out the mole mounds.Under no circumstances should we tread on frozen grass, because broken blades become more susceptible to infections.
