Practical Gardener: let's take care of balcony plants

Be careful with fertilizing!

Summer plants to be grown in containers are usually distinguished by intensive growth and even more abundant flowering. Being aware of this, we would like to provide them with optimal development conditions, and thus also a lot of nutrients. However, it is easy to overdo it.

The limited volume of the substrate in the containers causes that mineral s alts accumulate in them very quickly and salinity can quickly exceed the permissible limits.Too high a s alt concentration makes it harder for plants to take in water.

Even when water is abundant, it may be unavailable for plants (there is a so-called physiological drought).Drought symptoms, e.g. wilt or yellowing of plants, may prompt us to water plants intensively, which in turn causes them to overflow and suffocate.

How to avoid over-fertilization of the substrate? First of all, it is worth realizing that most of the standard mixtures for balcony plants already contain the necessary macro- and microelements for at least the first few weeks of cultivation, so it is not justified to enrich it with additional fertilizers.

Particular care should be taken with slow-release fertilizers. They are very convenient to use, but remember that the release of ingredients depends on the temperature. At high temperatures, ingredients are released more quickly, which can lead to a sudden increase in salinity.

We stabilize plants

It often happens that crops grown in containers are knocked over by the wind. Tall plants and standard forms with a high center of gravity are particularly vulnerable to this.In the case of such plants, it is good to pay attention that the container in which they grow has the correct shape (i.e. has a wide base) and is heavy enough.

For this reason, it is better to grow foams in heavy ceramic pots. You can also use heavy drainage, e.g. pebbles or gravel, instead of expanded clay.

Advantages and disadvantages of ampli

Ampla is a hanging goblet or bowl. The bulb can be anything with these characteristics, such as a lamp or a flowerpot filled with flowers.Undoubtedly, the flowery ample is one of the greatest decorations of a lounge corner, balcony, terrace or entrance to the house. You can plant various species in them, creating original compositions. There are, however, some problems with caring for such exhibited plants.

First of all, watering is more difficult. In high-hanging pots, it is not only difficult to control humidity, but also lifting a heavy watering can filled with water can be a problem. It is easy then to insufficiently water the plant or, on the contrary, overflow. in places where water should not drip, e.g. over the table.

Ample is also more strongly driven by the wind and for this reason plants that are sensitive to wind jerking, e.g. surfinie, grown from the west (this is where the winds blow in Poland most often) may grow worse in amplitudes.

It is worth protecting yourself against one more problem: theft, to which especially exposed samples are exposed, e.g. before entering the house. suspensions.
