Advice: how and where to plant quince

Table of contents

Common quince Cydonia oblonga is a large shrub or a small tree recommended for both plots and gardens. The fruit is lemon yellow in color and pear-shaped.

The quince bears fruit in October, the fruit is mainly suitable for preserves.Plants grow best in sunny positions, on light to medium-heavy soils. Many varieties turn yellow on soils with a pH greater than 7.

Quince has the opinion of a plant not very susceptible to diseases. In some sites, fire blight may be a serious problem (especially the 'Cydora Robusta' variety is resistant to it). Quince is a thermophilic plant. It bears less fruit in windy and cool places, while those that are formed are less aromatic.

We plant the quince at the beginning of November, allocating a lot of space for planting (the crown is 5 m high and wide).Quinces are the most viable when kept as a shrub or a low-growing tree, because these forms are closest to natural.

Planting quince

1. Dig a hole twice as large as the root ball of the potted tree.

2. Place a stake vertically at the side of the hole. Place the quince planted out of the pot in the middle of the well.

If the roots are firmly compacted, the root ball can be cut with a sharp knife.Plant the tree so deep that the grafting site is 10 cm above the ground.

3. Cover the hole with soil. Tie the tree and water it abundantly.
