P:I am the owner of a single-family house situated on a plot of 1300 m2. The "living room" part and the terrace are located on the side of the busy street. Bustle, noise and the stench of exhaust fumes are a great discomfort for residents. I would like to know what trees and shrubs I should plant on the plot and what else I can do to muffle the sounds coming from the street. Finally, I would like to add that it is the southern side of the property with clay soil.
O:Due to the immediate vicinity of a busy street, you can apply for a permission to erect a wall up to 2 meters high in the City Hall or the commune, which along with the shrubs and trees planted next to it it will muffle the noise a little, and also reduce the dust accompanying the traffic.
The following are resistant to urban pollution: yew, Serbian spruce, Californian fir, ginkgo, white dogwood, wigwood, gold currant, tamarisk. You can create an additional protective belt by planting trees next to the wall, then taller shrubs under them in the second row, and then shrubs lower. As the ground is quite heavy, it should be enriched with sand and peat, which will loosen the soil.
P:I inherited a plot of land a few years ago. In the beginning, all the plants grew, bloomed and fructified very nicely. For several years I have been observing that plants grow worse and less bloom. Before, I used to fertilize the plot with fertilizers from time to time, but I haven't been doing it for some time. Could that be the cause?
O:The plot has a lot of plants that take nutrients from the soil during vegetation. The soil, which has been hated for several years, is becoming sterile. Therefore, the plants develop worse and worse, they do not bloom and bear fruit. The soil must be fertilized systematically.
Organic fertilizers (such as manure, compost, green fertilizers) and mineral fertilizers should be applied to the soil. In emergency situations, when the plant needs to be helped quickly, foliar feeding can be used, e.g. with chelate fertilizers.
P:Where do we put the gas tank in the garden?
O:The gas tank is placed 3 m from the plot border and 6 m from the house. In the place where the gas pipes run, no trees or bushes may be planted within 2.5 m from the gas pipeline in both directions . The tank can only be covered with a grille with vines.
