PiO: improving the quality of clay soil

Table of contents

Q:Please kindly advise: how to improve clay soil quality?

O:Clay soils are cohesive. They contain a lot of fine particles and therefore are not very permeable. Their water capacity is large, but often there is no air in the soil. They are rich in nutrients.Any cultivation on these soils should increase their bulk and airiness and give them structure. They should be carried out in a state of average soil moisture.

To increase bulk, fertilize the soil with well-distributed manure and then dig the area. Liming heavy soils with quicklime is also of great importance - calcium oxide strongly loosens the soil.It is best to apply liming before the winter digging of the garden. It is also advisable to sow the legume mixture on green manure before setting up the garden.

They improve the structure and enrich the soil with easily digestible nutrients, especially nitrogen. If water accumulates in the hollow of the ground, drainage should be made or a pond should be set up in this place. Most ornamental plants, apart from the typically dry-loving plants, should grow on the soil prepared in this way.
