Wintering hebe

P:I got a plant called hebe. I don't know how to take care of it, can it be winter outside?

O:Hebe Hebe comes from New Zealand, Tasmania. The air there is usually warm and saturated with humidity, and in winter there are only sporadic frosts. For this reason, Hebe can only be a potted plant in Poland, used to decorate balconies and terraces during the summer. He must spend the winter indoors. You have to reckon with the fact that it retains its decorative qualities only for a few years.

It should be in a sunny place outside.Since its water demand is high, it should be regularly watered with soft water. It should be fed with multi-component fertilizer weekly or one-time fertilizer should be applied.

It is also worth removing faded inflorescences. No cutting required. Before frost, the plant must be in a bright and cool place, preferably at 10 ° C, older specimens may hibernate at 5 ° C and then they need much less water. The substrate should be acidic.

Riviera oddity

P:I am the owner of a strange flower. Apparently it comes from the Himalayas. The bulb of the plant is shaped like a potato. I have been growing the flower for 8 years and so far it has been sprouting an onion stalk, on the tip of which leaves similar to potato leaves were formed. The flower has white spots that are more intense in the sun. It is propagated in a similar way to potatoes: from one tuber, shoots grow back, on which another tuber is formed the size of a hazelnut. When it is about to rain, the leaves “cry”. When I transplanted my onions into a larger pot in the fall, a lily-like flower appeared, in the center of which a handsome stamen grew. The flower was lovely, but it smelled disgustingly. What's my strange plant's name?

O:The plant described by you is certainly a strange thing of the Riviera Amorphophallus rivieri. It belongs to the same family as the Himalayan palm Sauromatum, namely the picture family. What is commonly called a flower is a leaf sheath surrounding the flower bulb.

Dziwidło is not a poisonous plant, but the inflorescence gives off a disgusting smell. These plants come from warm and humid regions of the globe. In Sumatra grows the giant weirdo Amorphophallus titanum, the inflorescence of which reaches 3 meters.
