PiO: white coating on the pots

Table of contents

P:Please let me know what the white coating on the ground in the pots means. The tarnish is very hard and is formed in stoneware and plastic pots. Does this mean that the earth is not acidic enough?

O:The white bloom on the ground in the pots is usually a s alt bloom resulting from the evaporation of water from the ground. It appears when we water plants with hard water containing a lot of mineral compounds or when the substrate is over-fertilized.

Eruptions vary in form, color and consistency depending on the type of compounds that precipitate. The white color of the bloom is absorbed by the calcium s alts. S alt efflorescence always occurs after a longer cultivation period.

The compounds they contain are usually not absorbed by plants and do not actually harm them. However, if we do not replant the flowers for a long time, after some time the s alt concentration in the substrate may increase above permissible level and cause drying of the roots.

We can reduce or delay the appearance of blooms by watering the plants with soft or boiled water and replacing the outer layer of the substrate. When fertilizing, try to use the doses recommended on the packaging and appropriate for each plant species .
