It is a very valuable species grown in Polish gardens. Meservy Ilex x meserveae was bred in North America. It is a hybrid of the prickly holly Ilex aquifolium found in western Europe and northern Africa and the erect holly Ilex rugosa from Japan and Sakhalin.
One of the most popular female varieties is 'Blue Angel', which has stiff, shiny leaves with a spiky edge, turning bluish-green in winter.Produces numerous fruits that stay on shrubs until spring. The shrubs are dense and wide, growing up to 2 m after 10 years. This variety is characterized by greater resistance to low temperatures and can be successfully grown all over Poland in secluded and sheltered positions.
Creates low shrubs up to 2-3 m in height. Initially, they grow slower, but from 3-4 years they grow faster. In order for 'Blue Angel' to develop fruit, it requires planting a male variety, such as 'Blue Boy' or 'Blue Prince'.Prefers a secluded and sheltered position, it can grow in shade, partial shade or full sun.Likes neutral or alkaline soils, but necessarily moderately moist, preferably covered with mulch.
Grows poorly in heavy, catchment and cold soils. It can be trimmed and shaped, because it compacts very well and regenerates crown defects. In gardens it fits very nicely in groups, in exposed but secluded places. Pruning and shaping holly is best from early spring to the end of June. Later it may be risky due to the wintering of the bush.
