Japanese Magnolia 'Isis'

Among the numerous varieties, the newest variety of Japanese magnolia 'Isis', bred in Hungary in 2009, deserves special attention. It is one of the few and one of the first varieties of Japanese magnolia, a species characterized by high frost resistance. The new variety has a narrow, soaring crown and attractive white flowers.

It takes up little space, so it can be grown in small home gardens throughout the country.It flowers annually and very profusely.It had its loud premiere in the competition of new plants of the exhibition "Green is Life" in 2014, it was entered by the Polish nursery Szmit and won the highest award - a gold medal.

Japanese Magnolia 'Isis' is a fast-growing, small tree with a narrow columnar shape, reaching 8-10 m in height and only 2 to 3 m in width. Shoots rise vertically upwards and branch out. Dark green leathery leaves decorate the tree from spring to late fall. The leaves that appear in summer are slightly reddish.

The flowers develop in August, are fully developed in autumn, they hibernate in the form of thick generative buds covered with silky hairs. Their shape resembles candle flames. Leaf buds are several times smaller.Flowers develop in early spring on leaves devoid of leaves in April / May.The flowers are single, white, satin, star-shaped after unfolding.

Inside them there are numerous stamens and pistils spirally embedded.The first leaves develop on the twigs while flowering.Fruits composed of bellows ripen in autumn, are variable in shape, irregular, pink-red, and can be quite eye-catching.

Magnolias, as befits real aristocrats, look best in exposed and representative places.

Japanese Magnolia 'Isis' - basics of care

Japanese Magnolia 'Isis' is a soil tolerant tree, prefers moderately moist and permeable substrates with a slightly acidic reaction. Plants like sunny places, possibly they can be slightly shaded.

The variety is he althy and frost resistant. After planting the plants into the ground, it is worth mulching the soil with composted pine bark, which protects the soil surface against quick drying and weed infestation.
