There is only one species native to Europe, which is the privet Ligustrum vulgare. In nature, it occurs in forests and on the edge of forests.
Most garden species come from Asia. All parts of the ligustre are poisonous, but the flowers, after proper preparation, are used in medicine and cosmetology (in creams against dermatitis and sunburn).
Privet takes different forms of growth, depending on the variety. The shrub may have a slender or spreading silhouette, grows up to 2 to 5 m in height without pruning. There are evergreen and leaf-shedding species, and evergreen. In June / July, the plants bloom in white, from September to December, they are decorated with pea-sized blueberries (be careful, the seeds are poisonous!).
Shrubs do best in sun and partial shade, in moderately moist and humus soil.
The privet should be planted from March to May, or later - from September to November. We plant 3-4 seedlings on the running meter. After planting, the shoots are shortened by 1/3, up to a half.
The bushes are very resistant to care errors and are resistant to low temperatures. June / July is the best time for a forming cut.
Privet is most often used for hedge planting.Shrubs look interesting especially in natural gardens.White flowers attract clouds of bees and butterflies, fruits are a valuable source of food for birds, e.g. blackbirds. The Delavaya privet is suitable for the pots.
Privet is well suited for forming cutting. With a little determination you can cut out beautiful figures from the bushes.
