Pergola is a classic element of arrangement of almost every garden. It divides the surface into smaller parts, creates a border and a cover for a seating corner. The structure is built of stone, brick and metal, but most often of wood.Simple versions can be made by yourself, a passion for DIY is enough.
The thickness and strength of the wooden elements depends on whether the pergola poles are to be a simple scaffolding for climbing plants or whether they will support a roof covering a resting place. In this example, square timber with a size of 120x120 mm was used. They are strong enough to bear the weight of the roof joists and planks, as well as the roofing felt.To determine the materials needed, draw a pergola plan. We will buy them in garden centers and building depots.
Construction work is greatly facilitated by ready-made structural elements. Raw wood should be protected against the damaging effects of weather. The beams and boards impregnated by the manufacturer are the most durable. So that the wood does not rot, it must be protected from contact with moist soil. Therefore, pergola poles should be placed on special foundations.
1. Using a horizontally stretched (a spirit level necessary!) And a taut string, mark the required height of the poles. Use a saw to cut off the unnecessary upper sections.
2. Cut the inlets in the horizontal beams with a saw. Using a chisel, we give them the right shape.
3. A metal angle connects the column with the beam. Additional reinforcement is a diagonal beam fixed with nails.
4. The beams on the columns connect the cross beams. During assembly, use a spirit level to constantly check the horizontal and vertical position of the elements.
5. View of the connections in the corner. Diagonal reinforcing beams are set at an angle of 45 °.
6. The construction is ready. Instead of the six-column version, a smaller one with four columns is possible.
7. The roof beams should be drilled through and then fastened to the structure beams with galvanized nails.
Properly selected climbing plants can turn a pergola into a sheltered flower corner. If the construction is solid and stable, you can plant strong vines, such as wisteria and rambler roses. The vice bush makes evenings more pleasant with a beautiful fragrance. It also smells like a lot of roses and clematis. Sometimes, floppy shoots need extra support.
