When collecting the first crops, remember that patisons and squashes should not be too mature, because younger fruits are juicier and tastier. Also courgettes or patisons intended for marinating should be picked and conserved successively.
The most delicious fruits are zucchini 8-10 centimeters long, squash fruits up to 20 centimeters long, while patissons should be 10-12 centimeters in diameter, and if they are intended for marinating, they should be small, 3-4 centimeters in size.
In vertical cultivation of cucurbits using supports, picking up the fruit is easier. For this purpose, you can use a simple fence mesh or self-made structures made of stakes, wire and string. The fruits of plants grown in this way ripen faster because they have better access to light.
If we grow plants flat, do not translate them now, because it will limit their yield. Tomatoes, the most anticipated summer vegetables, are also starting to bear fruit.
Cultivars grown in the open will yield later, at the end of the month. Eggplants and peppers are also suitable for harvesting. In the case of pepper, delaying the harvest of ripe fruit may inhibit the development of new fruitlets. The eggplant should have a shiny skin, and the fruit must not be too overgrown - they are then more delicate in taste.
Also onion vegetables can be harvested. Onions grown from spring onions should be harvested when the chives are completely broken, and garlic planted in spring when half the leaves have broken. Before the planned onion harvesting, watering should be limited.
Droughts lasting several days in the summer may inhibit the growth of vegetables.Water your vegetables regularly to prevent water shortages. However, high temperatures mean that the water evaporates very quickly. Therefore, it is best to water in the morning or late afternoon, when the water has a greater chance of penetrating into the soil.
Additionally, mulching the soil around the plants will reduce water evaporation. The used mulches have an additional advantage: they prevent the development of competing plants. The best material is foil. It completely prevents water loss from the substrate. It can be transparent or black and white.
The use of black foil can overheat the soil.A good solution is to use organic mulches, e.g. straw, grass clippings, weeds. With the latter, remember to remove flowers that can be a source of seeds.
