Hydrangea shoots are covered with a fibrous bark, from which grasping roots grow. Thanks to them, the hydrangea can climb up to 15 m (and approx. 5 m wide). In the first years, the vines grow slowly, but at the latest after 4-8 years, when they first bloom, the annual shoot growth reaches 1 m.
The leaves are dark green and approx. 10 cm long, with 20-25 cm strong fragrant flowers blooming above them from June to July. The outer wreath of white flowers is sterile, only the miniature flowers in the center are fertile. The autumn decoration of the creeper is dry seed heads and golden leaves. The second ones fall off at the end of October.
Hydrangea provides optimal conditions for development in a cool, sheltered place in partial shade or shade. The substrate should be fertile and moist, but well-drained. Plants do not tolerate limestone and grow poorly in hard and lumpy soil.Crops in southern exposed sites must be regularly irrigated and mulched.
We plant the vines in the spring to the ground for hydrangeas or rhododendrons. The plants are fed every 2 weeks (with a special fertilizer for hydrangeas) and watered, if possible, with rainwater. In the first winter, we cover the crops with spruce branches.
Hydrangea is suitable for laying on walls and old trees. It is necessary to tie up young shoots.
The climbing hydrangea can also be used as a ground cover plant that creates carpets in shady places.
