Funkie - year-round care

Care and cultivation

The most suitable soil for funkia is not very compact, permeable, preferably a mixture of native soil, peat and fine pine bark in a ratio of 1: 1: 1, slightly acidic with a pH of about 6.

Funkie, regardless of the size of the rosette, have a relatively large leaf surface, through which water evaporates faster, hence a high water demand.Yellowing and drying out of the edges of the leaves, and later of the entire leaves, are symptoms of a lack of water. The most appropriate way to irrigate a Funkaa is to deliver water deep into the roots.

Sprinkling of plants often causes fungal infections that enter the plant with the soil during watering.During dry summer, water the plants abundantly with a watering can once every 5-6 days, without getting the leaves wet.

Fertilization

Plants do not require abundant fertilization. It is worth knowing that funkie is worse affected by over-fertilization than lack of fertilizer. We supply a maximum of twice: in April after the first leaves appear and at the turn of June and July, but not later.

There are no fertilizers specifically designed for funkia on the market. Plants can be fertilized with multi-component fertilizers or a long-acting fertilizer, which we apply once a season - in spring.

Important beauty treatments all year round

April

  • The first sprouts show above the ground.
  • Best month to split. When we notice in the previous season that the leaves are getting smaller and smallerand lighter, and the rhizome too dense, the plant must be rejuvenated. The treatment should be carried out before the leaves develop . Dig out the whole plant, divide it into several parts with a sharp knife, put it in the ground and water it abundantly.
  • This is the time when fungal diseases develop. The substrate and the emerging leaves can be sprayed with a fungicide.
  • Loosen the soil around the developing sprouts and sow the first dose of fertilizer (1-2 teaspoons of mineral fertilizer depending on the size of the plant).
  • Throughout the growing season we collect snails for which the funkies, especially those with soft leaves, are a real delicacy.

May

  • Remove yellowing leaves.
  • We wean the soil.
  • We remove flower shoots appearing in young plants, thanks to which the plant will grow more abundantly.

June, July, August

  • Second dose of fertilizer in June, smaller: 1-1.5 teaspoons per one plant.
  • After the appearance of thrips and spider mites, apply an insecticide.
  • We weed and loosen the soil, remove fading inflorescences, and water them in the case of dry summer.

September - October

  • After the first frosts, the weighing of funkia leaves should be systematically removed. They can become a habitat for pathogenic fungi.

November - December

  • In snow-free, frosty winters, we carefully protect the funk with dry leaves or peat.
