Trees and shrubs in September

Table of contents

Planting conifers

We plant coniferous trees and shrubs with bare root systems or in bales.

Soil for trees

We prepare a place for planting deciduous trees and shrubs in October and November. It should be dug deep and the top layer mixed with compost.

Trees in pots

We plant trees and bushes grown in containers.

Planting thermophilic trees

September is the last moment to plant thermophilic trees and shrubs, such as magnolias, and always green ones, such as rhododendrons, laurels, Fortune's euonymus, because they should take root before winter comes.

Systematic watering

If autumn is dry, we regularly water the trees and shrubs that are always green to prepare for wintering.

Potash fertilizers

We can spread potassium fertilizers, e.g. potassium sulphate, which will contribute to faster lignification of the shoots before the onset of winter and will prevent them from freezing.

Removing faded inflorescences of garden hydrangea

Garden hydrangea is a shrub that grows to a height of 1 m. Large flowers, gathered in magnificent spherical inflorescences, dia. 15-20 cm, they are formed a year earlier on last year's shoots. It ends flowering in August, but then it develops very decorative maroon-green seed heads, which we can cut in September. Trimming is done by trimming them approximately 5-10 cm below the inflorescence. Whole shoots are not cut, as there are buds with tied inflorescences on the shoots for the next year. This hydrangea is extremely sensitive to low temperatures, so it should be planted in a sunny or semi-shaded position, sheltered from frosty winds. Requires protection for the winter.
