The pond and its surroundings are a special part of the garden.Its charms are increased by platforms and platforms, thanks to which we can be even closer to the water.
The paths and footbridges connecting land with water are built in many ways and of different materials. Wood is the basic and most frequently used one. Planks, beams, scantlings, columns and piles are used to make many parts of the platform or landing structure, including base course and surface.
Well-prepared wooden elements, carefully impregnated, and then properly used and protected, will perfectly fulfill their functions for many years.Planks, beams or square timbers are usually easy to process , they can be easily adjusted and combined with each other. Their nice, natural appearance is also of great importance.
The shape of the platform can be adjusted to the shoreline, thus enlarging its surface. The platform hanging over the surface of the water must to a large extent be based on a solid concrete foundation.The bottom surface of the structure should never come into contact with the water, therefore it is necessary to anticipate the fluctuations of the mirror and place it above the highest possible water level in the pond.Plants adjacent to the irregular edge of the platform look very impressive.
If we like to tinker and are not afraid of more difficult projects, let's try to make awooden platform at the edge of a garden pond by ourselves.To prevent weeds from growing, cover the ground surface that has been cleared of plants with pond foil. The foundation of the entire structure is attached to it.
Supporting beams made of square timber with a cross-section of about 3x3 cm should be arranged at a maximum spacing of 60 cmTo connect the individual elements, we use screws and bolts made of stainless steel. The upper surface of the landing should be 20-30 cm above the water level. We arrange its boards at intervals of 6-10 mm so that the rainwater can run off freely and quickly. The part of the platform protruding above the water usually requires support with wooden or concrete piles.
Recommended native species:
• Douglas fir is hard and very durable, easy to process, requires annual protection with oil;
• larch is easy to process by hand, very durable, needs oil protection every year;
• robinia is very hard and durable, but often difficult to access.
Exotic wood (e.g. Bangkirai) is very compact and durable, but more expensive.Composite boards made of wood and plastic waste are resistant to the vagaries of the weather and rotting.
A wooden pier going deep into the pond, surrounded by lush water plants, is a favorite place not only for lazing around domestic animals.The owners also often sit by the water, rightly thinking that it is one of the most pleasant corners of the garden.
Sitting on a small "island", you can see the plants from a completely different perspective, enjoy the summer sun and soak your feet in the water. Already when designing the pond, you should designate a place for the platform, then choose durable boards that must be carefully protected against moisture.
