Colorful hyacinths

Table of contents

In winter, many of us miss the sun and the light, warm breeze of spring wind. We miss the ubiquitous green and colorful flowers. Then we visit florists more often in search of wonderful bulbous plants that will appear in February.

Among them, undoubtedly, hyacinths. The cheerful colors of the flowers improve our mood and bring a smile to our faces, and the beautiful scent spread around the plants is simply captivating. In flower shops you can already buy sprinkled onions with clearly visible flower buds. They can be single plants or in colorful compositions. They are usually placed in various decorative containers. When carrying delicate plants home, remember to carefully cover them against frost and wind.

In the apartment, place the pots with hyacinths in a bright placewith a temperature of about 20˚C. In such conditions, we will enjoy beautiful flowers for up to two weeks. If the shoots or leaves of the plants tilt to the side, they can be supported with a decorative ladder or a nice twig. If the bulbs we buy do not have visible buds yet, place them in the dark (e.g. under a paper hood) and in a cool room (7-9˚C). When the leaves reach a few centimeters long, remove the cap and move the plants to a warm (20-25˚C) and bright place. Remember that for flowering plants, the air temperature should not exceed 20˚C.

Once the hyacinths have faded, we usually throw them away. But garden owners can still cultivate these plants in the ground. In this case, remove the dead inflorescence from the overblown hyacinths, leaving the stem and leaves behind. Plants continue to assimilate
and can accumulate nutrients in the bulbs. We still water themand feed them with small doses of fertilizers. Only when the leaves turn yellow can we remove them. Then we take the onion out of the dish, dry it and store it in a paper bag in a dark airy place until autumn. In September, we plant the onions in the garden. We do not rush the same bulbs again, because when they are used up in one year, they may not bloom again.

We can also prepare hyacinth bulbs for forcing.First, at the end of September, choose good-looking onions (about 17 cm in circumference), he althy and undamaged. The treatment simulates winter conditions by cooling the bulbs at 5-9˚C in the dark for 10-12 weeks. After this time, root buds will appear at the base of the onion, which allows you to plant them up to 2/3 of their height in the ground.

Hyacinths can also be grown in a water bath. Then place the onions so that only the roots have direct contact with the water. We can buy special glass vessels designed for this purpose. Before placingin soil or water, it is a good idea to treat the onions against fungal diseases by soaking them in a 1% solution of fungicide.
