Kiwi fruits are known to almost everyone, despite the fact that plants in a wider cultivation are not long ago. It is an interesting climber, native to Asia, and it is more and more often found in our gardens. At the beginning of the 20th century, copies of this plant were brought to America and New Zealand, where its commercial cultivation developed very quickly.
Kiwi fruit is derived from the tasty or Chinese actinidia. The oval brown fruit is covered with fine hairsi. The greenish flesh with lots of fine seeds has a refreshing and sour taste. These species (Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis), however, are not suitable for gardens due to their high sensitivity to frost.
Good results are obtained when plants are grown in containers, which are transported to cool rooms for the winter. Actinidia arguta is perfect for growing in Polish gardens. The shrubs will be adopted practically all over the country, because they can withstand even thirty-degree frosts without any problems. The late flowering of plants also speaks in favor of the choice of Actinidia, thanks to which the flowers will not be damaged by late spring frosts.
Shrubs are long-lived and in Polish conditions they often reach several meters in height. They also have no special soil requirements. However, remember to choose a sunny and sufficiently humid place. It is also necessary to build a sufficiently strong scaffolding on which the kiwi shoots will be supported.
Almost all types of Actinidia are dioecious and dioecious. This means that there are both plants with male flowers and plants with only female flowers from which the fruit will be produced. In order for us to be able to wait for fruit, it is necessary to plant, apart from female plants, also a male specimen, providing pollen for pollination of flowers. When deciding to grow this species, do not forget about the male specimen at the time of purchase.
