White currant rust on pine

The disease called white currant rustis caused by the fungus Cronartium ribicola. It attacks five-needle pines (acorn pine, Himalayan pine, small-flowered pine, white pine and pine wood pine). It needs two hosts to develop, so it moves from pines to currants (mainly blackcurrants) and gooseberries.

Pine rust can take several years to develop. The fungus hibernates on pine shoots. The firstrust symptoms appear in the form of yellow spots on pine needlesThen yellow-orange discoloration appears at the base of the sick needles, and the bark becomes swollen. In early spring, yellow spots and spindle-shaped swellings appear in these places, which give rise to yellow spores of the fungus , and in the following year, white-yellow bubbles appear, from which spores pour out to move to the next hosts, i.e. gooseberry and currant bushes. When the fungus infects a pine trunk (in the photo above), the entire tree may die.

Good to know!
Cronartium flaccidum fungus can cause similar symptoms in the form of leaks of resin and white-yellow nodules on the trunks and branches of Scots pine. This disease is referred to as pine bark rust. It may occur on double-needle pines. The fungus uses some species of herbaceous plants as a second host.

Combating white currant rust on pineinvolves cutting and removing (preferably burning) the affected pine shoots. Apply a garden ointment containing a fungicide, eg Funaben Plus 03 PA, to the cut wound. If symptoms appear on the main shoot, the diseased area should be cut with a sharp knife to the white, he althy wood tissue, and the wound should also be covered with garden ointment with the addition of fungicide.
Additionally, during the infection period (late summer), performspraying with systemic fungicidesIn amateur garden crops, it is best to use Saprol Hobby Long Acting.Spraying can be repeated after two weeks.

White currant rust on the currant

On currants, white currant rust contributes to the formation ofchlorotic and later brown spots on the upper side of currant leavesIn the place of these stains,on the lower side of the leaves orange-rusty warts developHeavily infested leaves dry up and fall prematurely, as in the case of anthracnose, i.e. currant leaves.
White currant rust is combatedusually by spraying against anthracnosis of currant leaves, which is already started before the flowering of bushes. If, however, anthracnose spraying is not necessary, the control of white currant rust begins after the flowering of the currant, around mid-June and continues until the fruit harvest with a waiting period. The following products are helpful: Miedzian 50 WP, Miedzian Extra 350 SC, Signum 33 WG, Magnicur Gold.
However, before we reach for ready-made sprays and chemical plant protection products, it is worth consideringecological control of the white-currant rustwith the use of self-prepared sprays. It is recommended to spray with horsetail decoction diluted 1: 4 or with mugwort extract used without dilution. Ecological spraying against currant rust should be carried out several times a season, starting in spring.
